Richard succeeded his father as Earl of Arundel in 1376. After the death of his first wife in 1385, he married Philipa Mortimer (born Ludlow Castle 21/11/1375, died 24/09/1401 bur Boxgrove Priory near Lewes). He took an active part against King Richard II with the Duke of Gloucester. Despite obtaining a pardon for his political offences in 1394 he was arrested on 12 July 1397 and found guilty of Treason. He was beheaded at Cheapside on 21 Sep 1397 and buried in the Church of the Augustine Friars, Bread Street, London
