Gilbert was the 4th Earl of Hertford and the 6th Lord of Clare. He was recognised as Earl of Gloucester after the death of his Aunt Isabel Countess of Gloucester. She was the sister of Gilbert's mother Amice. He was present at the signing of the Magna Carta.
