Gerald is also known as Gerald FitzWalter of Windsor.
Nest is also known as Nesta of Wales. She was reportedly the most beautiful woman in Wales. She spent most of her youth in the court of Henry I by whom she had her first son. On her marriage to Gerald, he received a dowry of the site of Carew Castle and together they built the first castle on the site to bring up their family. Owain ap Cadwgan was so overwhelmed by Nest's beauty that he is said to have scaled the walls of Carew Castle, started a fire and raised the alarm - in the confusion Gerald escaped while Nest remained to be taken prisoner by Owain. Gerald did not retrieve his wife (and two new children) until six years later when he killed Owain in battle. After Gerald's death the following year, Nest then became the mistress Stephen (Castellan of Cardiff Castle) and had a child Robert. It is thought that she died around 1136.
