Joseph Alderman came to Canada in 1869 at the age of 18, with two of his friends. They stopped first in Toronto doing construction work. They then made their way west, working on roads and ditches to pay their way, and Joseph stopped at Brooke Township. He worked for farmers and, when he married in 1876, had bought land of his own in Brooke Township in the Province of Ontario.
Joseph's life came to a very abrupt end. The following is the extract is from his obituary in the local paper.
A terrible fatality occurred at the home of Joseph Alderman on Sunday Nov 26 when he was attacked by a bull in his stables and instantly killed. The animal had in some way worked the chain over its head and when Mr Alderman went to let the cattle in the brute attacked him before he could make his escape. His wife followed him in about ten minutes and was horrified to find him trampled to death in a gutter. Finding it impossible to get him away from the infuriated animal she phoned for help. Neighbors were soon gathered and the animal was driven out into the yard where it was later shot. Willing hands carried the lifeless body, which was terribly mangled, into the house. He was laid to rest in Rickard's cemetary on Wednesday. Mr A.A. Fanjoy of Wheatly an old friend of the family conducting the service. Had Mr Alderman lived until Dec 1st he would have been 60 years old. He was born in Wiltshire, England in 1851 and came to Brooke on his birthday 42 years ago. Thirty five years ago he married Miss Meribah Holmes of Aberfeldy and by hard work they succeeded in building up a comfortable home. Besides his wife he is survived by two sons, Robert and Charlie, and four daughters, Mrs A. Cox, Mary, Ada and Bessie. The sorrowing family have the sympathy of the whole community in their sad bereavement.
We wish to record our thanks to Mary Isabell Alderman - the daughter of Charles Leonard Alderman - for providing the information on this page.
