Narberth to Haverfordwest

The train journey from the midlands to south west wales took us most of the day.  The journey was uneventful - thank goodness - and all train connections were made without a hitch.  Firstly we caught the train from Tamworth to Newport changing here to catch the train to Carmarthen.  The last leg was the short journey to Narberth which housed castle number 1.  We arrived to be welcomed by heavy rain at just after three in the afternoon.

We soon found Narberth Castle and took a few photos trying at the same time to keep the camera dry.  From here we cycled to the castles at Llawhaden (shown on the right) and Wiston (below), making quick visits to the ruins in each case.  I had another castle up my sleeve which was at Camrose - but as the weather was so abismal we decided to give this a miss.  Narberth and Whiston Castles were destroyed by Llewelyn ap Iorwerth in the early 13th century and it is possible that William Marshal had something to do with the rebuilding of Whiston in the 13th century.  It was too late in the day to visit the castle at Haverfordwest - so after a quick visit to the priory we made our way to our digs for the night. Our bags and outer garments were dripping.  The water had even got inside our panniers in places.  Our landlady came to the rescue and soon had all the wet clothes dried off in the tumble drier or hanging on the line in the conservatory and further suggested that we should eat in by having a pizza delivered from the local takeaway.  We didn't need much persuasion that this was an excellent idea.

The mileage at the end of the day was 18 miles.
