Robert was created Earl of Gloucester in 1122. He was also known by the names Robert The Consul and Robert FitzRoy. He was the eldest illegitimate son of Henry I. He improved the basic Norman castle at Cardiff, which his father in law had built, with the addition of a stone keep which still survives today.
