Fernando succeeded his maternal uncle in 1217 as Fernando III "el Santo" King of Castile, Toledo and Extremadura. He succeeded his father in 1230 as Fernando III King of Leon and Galicia.
Fernando married firstly in Burgos on 30th November 1219, Elisabeth von Staufen, the daughter of Philipp Duke of Swabia King of Germany. She died on 5th November 1235. They had ten children.
Fernando married secondly Jeanne de Dammartin.
