ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Alfonso succeeded his father in 1188 as Alfonso IX King of Leon and Galicia.
Alfonso married firstly on 15th February 1191, his first cousin Teresa de Portugal.  They had three children.  The Pope excommunicated him because he had not obtained Papal dispensation for this marriage until Alfonso agreed to a separation in 1198.
Alfonso then married another first cousin, Berenguela de Castilla.  This marriage was initially permitted by Pope Innocent III but subsequently was prohibited and again he was forced to separate (in 1204).  Pope Innocent III excommunicated the couple but agreed that their children could remain legitimate.  Berenguela became a Cistercian nun at Burgos.
Alfonso also had many mistresses and another twelve children through these relationships.
