After the death of Richard's father, Louis IV King of France briefly controlled Rouen, and kept Richard prisoner. Richard escaped, whereupon he succeeded as Richard I "Sans Peur" Duke of Normandy. He married firstly Emma daughter of Hugues The Grand Duke of France, but there are no recorded children from this marriage.
