Some references give Joans maiden name as Joan Brydges.
After John Gifford's death (~1528) Joan married William Thornbull. Joan left a will dated 4th Dec 1557 which was proved on 18 Feb 1557/8 - you can link to a transcription of this will. The will verifies the connection between the Gifford and Goddard families in that Joan's daughter Anne Giffard married a Goddard.

The date for the birth of the second child, John, tallies with information obtained from the will of his grandfather William. William Gifford died in 1549 and the age of John is given as 23 in the post mortem of this death.
