Sir John de Welles (5th Lord Welles of Gainsby, Lincolnshire) was retained for life by John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster in 1372. He accompanied the duke on his march from Calais to Bordeaux in 1373. He was frequently abroad or serving in the French wars. He took part in King Richard II's expedition to Scotland in 1385. After Eleanor's death he married Margaret ? around 1417.
