Hugh Poynings was alternatively known as Lord St John of Basing or Hugh St John
Sir Hugh Poynings married firstly Elizabeth Ferrers around October 1394 (10/10/1394 was the date of settlement). She was the daughter and co-heiress of Martin Ferrers, Knight of Bere Ferrers in Devon. They had a daughter Joan. Elizabeth died about 1406 and Hugh then married Eleanor de Welle and they had two daughters.
After the death of Sir Hugh Poynings, Elizabeth married Godfrey Hilton, Knight, around 1438.
